This two-day course will provide a comprehensive overview of the therapeutic management of patients with cardiovascular disease that are especially applicable in the field of both physical therapy and occupational therapy.
     This course will review the physiology as well as pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system and exercise physiology concepts. Instruction will focus on the management of patients with coronary artery disease, hypertension, congestive heart failure, valvular heart disease, pacemakers, peripheral arterial disease, venous disease, and pulmonary embolism.
     The concepts and principles of this course will enhance the participant's knowledge and clinical skills through lecture, case studies, videotape presentations, and demonstration/practice. Emphasis will be placed on practical methods for evaluation, clinical decision making process and effective treatment strategies using appropriate exercise. Evidence based information on a variety of therapeutic approaches will be discussed that will provide a foundation from which appropriate decision can be made with regard to patient needs.

COURSE # 5: Patients with Cardiovascular Disease: Effective Management in Physical and Occupational Therapy - DR. JOHN LOWMAN

This two-day course is designed to address these complexities and to provide contemporary strategies for the provision of efficacious physical and occupational therapy. The course will review the physiology of the cardiovascular system and principles of exercise physiology, as well as review relevant laboratory tests and basic interpretation of EKG.  Course content also includes the pathophysiology and medical/surgical management of cardiovascular diseases, with an emphasis on the implications for PT and OT. The focus will be on health conditions commonly seen by PTs and OTs, including hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, electrophysiological disorders (e.g., atrial fibrillation, pacemakers), peripheral arterial disease, and venous thromboembolism (i.e., deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism). An emphasis will be on an evidence-based evaluation and assessment of impairments and activity limitations, including functional capacity and functional performance testing, as well as on exercise prescription and physical activity recommendations, including resistance, functional, and endurance training, breathing techniques, and energy conservation/work simplification.

COURSE # 6: Safe and Effective Management of Patients with Cardiovascular Disease: What Therapists Need to Know - DR. WILLIAM DE TURK

This two-day course will provide a comprehensive overview of management of patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome, peripheral vascular disease, hypertension and other related cardiovascular pathologies.  Detailed information on monitoring strategies, exercise program development and mechanical devices frequently encountered will be provided, together with interventions appropriate to this patient population. Instruction will include review of clinically-relevant cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, and exercise physiology including metabolic pathways and energy systems. Participants will gain knowledge in current diagnostic schemes (eg, Acute Coronary Syndrome), medical and surgical management, and interventions appropriate to acute, out-patient and rehab settings. The course will also focus on evaluation skills (eg, select heart and lung sounds), and practical electrocardiography (coupled with appropriate responses); attendees will learn how to use vital signs to manage individual treatment sessions as well as how to advance patients through a rehab program by developing exercise prescriptions. Skills and understanding will be obtained through lecture, videotape presentations and laboratory exercises. Case studies will pull together and summarize course components.
